Emerald Cut Diamond Size Chart
By Devin Jones
Diamond shoppers often confuse diamond carat weight and diamond size, but the size most shoppers typically care about is the diamond's surface area, or how big the diamond looks to the human eye. Diamond carat weight on the other hand is a measure of weight. Two diamonds with identical carat weights might look completely different from above, depending on their length, width, depth, and other dimensions.
Emerald Cut Diamond Carat Size Chart
To calculate our emerald cut diamond size chart below, we determined the average surface area for each diamond by multiplying each diamond's length and width (in millimeters).

Emerald Cut Diamond Carat Size vs. Surface Area
The below diamond size chart shows the changing dynamic between an increase in carat size and the respective increase in an emerald cut diamond's visual appearance. While carat weight is typically thought of as an indication of a diamond's size (meaning visual appearance), carat is actually a measure of weight. Diamonds of the same carat size can vary slightly in their visual appearance depending on how they are cut. For instance, a diamond with a deeper cut will appear smaller than a diamond of the same carat weight with a shallower cut.
The below diamond size chart shows carat weight on the x-axis and surface area in millimeters on the y-axis.
For our emerald cut diamond analysis we averaged the diameters of hundreds of thousands of diamonds from top rated jewelers to generate the chart shown above. This analysis informed our visual carat weight calculation which allows StoneAlgo users to easily compare a diamond's carat weight and its size to see if it looks larger or smaller than expected.
